Before a marriage can occur in Tennessee, a license must be obtained from the County Clerk. The fee is $97.50. The fee is reduced to $37.50 if the couple completes a Premarital Preparation Course. There is no waiting period, the marriage license is valid for thirty (30) days from issuance, and is good for ceremonies performed anywhere in Tennessee.

Sevier County Clerk’s office does not provide civil ceremonies. A list of wedding providers can be picked up in our office or click here for wedding provider list.
Officiant of Ceremony: The officiant (person who performs the marriage ceremony) is required to return the signed documents within three (3) business days after the marriage (BLACK INK ONLY). Only upon the return of the signed documents will the clerk provide the applicants with their certified Marriage Certificate. The certified Marriage Certificate will be mailed to the address provided by the applicants. Allow 2-3 weeks after the ceremony to receive the certified Marriage Certificate in the mail.

Marriage License Issued to Same Sex Couple
Effective June 26, 2015, same sex couples may obtain a marriage license and be married in the State of Tennessee.
Marriage License Prohibited Between Lineal Relatives
Tennessee Code Annotated “36-3-101. Prohibited degrees of relationship” states:
Marriage cannot be contracted with a lineal ancestor or descendant, nor the lineal ancestor or descendant of either parent, nor the child of a grandparent, nor the lineal descendants of husband or wife, as the case may be, nor the husband or wife of a parent or lineal descendant.

Before a marriage can occur in Tennessee, a license must be obtained from a County Clerk. Ministers of the Gospel, Rabbis, Christian Science practitioners, and various civil officials are authorized by law to solemnize a marriage.
Marriage license requirements are specific to each applicant's age. Please refer to the following guidelines:
-Blood tests not needed
-No waiting period
-ID requirements:
One of the following: State certified birth certificate, Driver License, State Issued ID
-Identification guidelines for Legal Aliens who do not have a social security number:
1) Each with valid expiration dates: Passport and American Visa, or
2) Resident Alien Card
-Please contact your county for specific fees.
-You must know the following:
Parents full name (including maiden name of mother)
Parents state of birth and address (if living)
Applicant's number of prior marriages
Date last marriage ended (if applicable)
-A marriage license is valid for 30 days after issuance and may be executed outside of Tennessee. However, it must be returned to the issuing Clerk for recording and filing with the Tennessee Vital Records Office.
-Blood tests are no longer needed
-If applicant is 17 years of age, the other party has to be within four years their senior.
-Consent of parents, guardian, or next of kin (unless minor emancipated).
-Parent or guardian must accompany in applying for license. Custodial Parent must bring custody papers (if applicable) to show proof of custody.
-Identification guidelines for Legal Aliens:
1) Each with valid expiration dates: Passport and American Visa, or
2) Resident Alien Card
-ID requirements:
-Proof of Social Security Number (Social Security Card or Driver License containing SSN)
